Does outdoor adventure shut down in West Virginia come winter? No way! It just moves a little farther up the mountain. West Virginia has some of the best skiing east of the Mississippi.

Winterplace on Flat Top Mountain is probably the most accessible ski resort anywhere. It's not exactly at the end of Exit 125 off of I-77, but it is darn close. Two minutes after you leave the interstate, you can pull into the parking lot of Winterplace

The owners of Winterplace are continually improving and adding to the resort. It has the highest snowmaking capacity in the southeast, plus 100% snowmaking on every trail. That means every trail at the resort is as good as it can be.

Like millions of others, I got to see halfpipe competition for the first time this past winter during the 2002 Winter Olympics from Salt Lake City. A snowboard park complete with a new halfpipe is the newest addition to the resort. The park has its own lift and is contoured with all the tabletops, hips, rails, gaps and cool stuff a boardhead could ask for.

Altogether there are 27 trails, nine lifts and the longest skiing day in the southeast: 14 hours on weekends and holidays, 13 hours on weekdays. If you buy an all day ticket, night skiing is free.

Skiing is a strenuous sport and you work up an appetite. The resort has five restaurants and two lounges.
Say you've never skied before? No problem. Winterplace is a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America. Young or old, you can learn to ski or snowboard at the resort.

They even have a guarantee. They promise you'll learn to ski or snowboard or you can take the class again absolutely FREE! So if you always wanted to try skiing or snowboarding, there's no time like the present.
