Ahh, Summertime in Southern West Virginia! What a great place to be during one of the most favored seasons of the year. There is so much going on by way of adventures, sightseeing, visiting, relaxing and simply enjoying the air. One of the great things about Southern West Virginia during this time of the year is the number of fairs, festivals and special events that take place throughout the nine-county region. A few highlights are outlined below.
Celebrate the 4th of July in Fayetteville this year. This quaint New River Gorge town, situated on the south side of the New River Gorge Bridge, offers a home-town appeal during the New River Gorge Heritage Festival July 3 & 4. During the second week in July, Summers County celebrates John Henry Days. Three days of entertainment at Great Bend Tunnel in Talcott, where the legend of John Henry the Steel Drivin Man began. This years event is slated for July 9 11. For more information call 304.466.5420.
Camp Washington Carver, in Clifftop, is a wonderful setting for the 15th Annual Appalachian String Band Music Festival. Camp Washington Carver, once a 4-H extension camp for the states African Americans, now serves as a mountain cultural arts center. This five-day mountaintop gathering (August 4 8) features string band musicians and fans from around the world. Enjoy concerts, contests, dancing, workshops and family activities. Dont miss this years State Fair of West Virginia! August 13 22 the fairgrounds in Fairlea will come alive! A celebration of the states agriculture industry & animal husbandry fair goers can enjoy exhibits, arts & crafts, food and not to mention a great entertainment line-up! The Appalachian Festival, a favorite annual event that takes place in Beckley, will take place August 26 29 with the traditional Taste of Appalachia Block Party on Thursday night on Main Street. Friday & Saturday host the Appalachian Arts & Crafts Fair at the Raleigh County Armory. Other festival events include a Zucchini Cook-off and 8th Annual Car show at Crossroads Mall.
